Four people seriously injured in Smiler Accident

Four people have been seriously injured and 12 people have minor injuries in an accident onboard The Smiler at Alton Towers.

The accident happened when an empty train had been sent round the track but not returned to the station before a train full of riders was sent out. The empty train had stalled in the Batwing element of the ride. The train full of 16 riders travelled round the ride circuit before crashing directly into the back of the empty train.

Air ambulances were and the emergency services were called just after 2pm when the incident had happened.

The rescue operation of getting the riders stuck on board the train took several hours, the more seriously injured riders were taken off first before the remainder of the riders were helped off.

Alton Towers has announced that the park will be shut on Wednesday 3rd June while HSE (Health & Safety Executive) carry out an investigation as to how this accident happened.
