On June 2nd, 2015, five people were seriously injured on The Smiler rollercoaster at Alton Towers Resort. Sixteen people were injured on a coaster which reaches up to 50mph with 14 inversions.
Today, Merlin Entertainments plea guilty in court after breaching Health & Safety of it's guests. The company Merlin Entertainments was warned that it may face a"very large fine" by the judge.
Merlin Attractions Operations had previously accepted responsibility for the crash after carrying out its own internal investigation following the incident in June last year.
A statement from the victims' lawyers said: "Given that such serious injuries could be sustained on a fun day out, it is hardly surprising that a criminal offence was committed."
The guilty plea was to the charge of breaching the Health & Safety at Work Act, which is for the safety of everybody at the theme park, including employee's and the guests.
Merlin have also stated after their investigation that further measures have been put in place on The Smiler and have other similar rides "to ensure that something like this cannot happen again."
The investigation statement has been published for public viewing, where you can also see the damage to the The Smiler cars.
